Sedation Dentistry Reduces the Fear and Anxiety that are Affecting Your Oral Health

sedation dentistry las vegas nvRegular visits to your dentist is one of the best ways to maintain the health of your teeth and prevent the need for extensive dental procedures in the future and emergency dental care in Las Vegas. However, for many people the mere thought of making a dental appointment creates a great deal of anxiety and some people are so afraid of going to the dentist that they simply put it off, which causes their dental problems to worsen. If you have been putting off dental care out of fear and anxiety, sedation dentistry may be the perfect solution for alleviating the fear and dental anxiety you experience.

Who Benefits From Sedation Dentistry?

Prior to the availability of sedation use by dentists, many people allowed their oral health to deteriorate and simply tolerated their unappealing smile. Their fear and anxiety prevented them from going to their dentist. Today’s procedures involve the availability of sedation, which allows you to have the dental work you need performed painlessly and without fear. Sedation benefits:

  • People who fear needles
  • Those who have a problem becoming numb after receiving Novocain.
  • Patients who have dental anxiety due to a bad past experience at the dentist
  • People who require multiple dental procedures
  • Those who have a strong gag reflex
  • Patients who have physical disabilities

Types Of Available Sedation – Sedation Dental Care

All of the medications used are safe and effective. All of the medications used work in different ways and the amount of time they last varies. At Hi Tech Dental Care in Las Vegas will discuss the different options with you and recommended the sedation method that is the most appropriate for you with the type of dental work you are having done. Sedatives can be administered through inhalation, orally and/or intravenously.

  • Minimal sedation is often used for patients who are not completely fearful of dental procedures, but prefer a mild sedation that will help them relax throughout the procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is administered through inhalation, is one of the most common forms of mild sedation.
  • Moderate sedation is slightly stronger than nitrous oxide. You will be slightly drowsy, but it still allows you to remain awake during procedures. Moderate sedation typically involves oral sedatives, such as diazepam (Valium) or lorazepam (Ativan). You are typically instructed to take the pill about two hours before the procedure is performed.
  • Deep sedation, which is typically used for people who are having an intrusive procedure, such as a wisdom tooth extraction or a root canal. However, deep sedation may be recommended if you have a serious dental phobia. This type of sedation renders you unconscious, so you will not know what is going on during the procedure and you will not have any memory of the procedure. This type of sedation is done intravenously.

Sedation dentistry may not be for everyone, but if your oral health is suffering out of fear of going to the dentist, sedation is the perfect solution to help you get the smile you have always wanted. Keep in mind that when you are sedated for a dental procedure, you will need to have someone with you to drive you home afterwards.
